The Wisconsin Arts Board (WAB) has awarded a Creative Communities Grant to Write On, Door County, in partnership with the Peninsula Pulse and 8142 Review. This grant program supports projects that further WAB’s goals in the areas of arts education, folk and traditional arts, and local arts development in the state.

Write On has received a local-arts grant to support the production of 8142 Review, a forthcoming annual literary magazine that will feature the work of the winners of the annual Hal Prize contest – originally called Hal Grutzmacher’s Writers’ Exposé and Photography Jubilee. The magazine will feature the winners’ fiction and nonfiction writing, poetry and photography, as well as work by the contest’s judges and more.

The 2021 Hal Prize judges are Lan Samantha Chang for fiction, Mark Wunderlich for poetry, Faith Adiele for nonfiction and the daughter-father team of Coburn and Tad Dukehart for photography. The Hal Prize submission deadline is Sept. 15.

Through the WAB grant funding, Write On will host a free, online workshop called Sharing Our Stories: Writing Essays That Sell for community members who are interested in learning more about writing nonfiction essays. It will be held June 29, 6-8 pm. The workshop is free, but registration is required at writeondoorcounty.org. Submission to the Hal Prize is not a requirement for participation, but it is an option. Other free community writing events funded by the WAB grant will also be available this summer. Thanks in part to the support from the Wisconsin Arts Board, 8142 Review will be published in November. Visit thehalprize.com for more information about this literary magazine and Hal Prize submissions.
